1. Introduction

Magistra Andalusia: Jurnal Ilmu Sastra (MAJIS) is committed to the principles of Open Access and to the broad, equitable, and immediate dissemination of scholarly knowledge.

The journal recognises that unrestricted access to scholarly literature is an important component of academic communication. Removing financial and unnecessary access barriers enables researchers, students, educators, institutions, practitioners, and members of the public to discover, read, use, and build upon scholarly work.

MAJIS therefore provides immediate and permanent open access to all articles published through its official journal platform. The journal does not impose subscription fees, paywalls, or mandatory registration requirements as a condition for readers to access published articles.

MAJIS's Open Access model is designed to support:

  • the free dissemination of scholarly knowledge;

  • international visibility and discoverability of research;

  • equitable access to academic literature;

  • scholarly communication across institutional and geographic boundaries;

  • responsible reuse and adaptation of published research;

  • long-term accessibility of the scholarly record; and

  • compliance, where applicable, with institutional and funder open-access requirements.

MAJIS publishes its articles under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence. This licence permits users to read, download, copy, distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon published material, including for commercial purposes, provided that the applicable attribution and ShareAlike requirements are fulfilled.

This policy defines the principles, rights, responsibilities, licensing conditions, and operational arrangements governing Open Access publication at MAJIS.

The policy is informed by established Open Access principles, including the Budapest Open Access Initiative, and by the Open Access framework reflected in the Open Access Policy of Jurnal Optimasi Sistem Industri (JOSI). It is also intended to operate consistently with the relevant principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) concerning transparency, accessibility, and responsible scholarly publishing.

This policy does not constitute or imply certification, endorsement, or approval by COPE or any other external organisation.

2. Definition of Open Access

2.1 Open Access

For the purposes of MAJIS, Open Access means that scholarly articles published by the journal are made freely available to readers online without subscription charges, paywalls, or other unnecessary financial barriers to access.

MAJIS follows an immediate Open Access model.

Accordingly, published articles are freely accessible from the time of publication and remain available through the journal's online platform.

2.2 Immediate Access

MAJIS does not impose an embargo period between publication and public access.

Once an article is formally published, readers may access the article immediately through the official MAJIS website.

2.3 Permanent Access

MAJIS aims to maintain continued access to its published scholarly content.

The journal's Open Access commitment is therefore intended to extend beyond the date of initial publication.

Long-term availability is supported by the journal's digital-preservation arrangements, including the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) and regular server and database backups.

The journal's separate Archiving and Digital Preservation Policy provides further details concerning long-term preservation.

2.4 User Access and Reuse

Open Access at MAJIS includes not only the ability to read published articles but also specified rights to reuse the material under the applicable Creative Commons licence.

Subject to the terms of CC BY-SA 4.0, users may:

  • read;

  • download;

  • copy;

  • distribute;

  • print;

  • search;

  • link to;

  • index;

  • text- and data-mine where legally and technically possible;

  • remix;

  • adapt; and

  • build upon

the published material.

Such uses remain subject to the conditions of the applicable licence and relevant law.

3. Policy Details

3.1 Free and Immediate Access

All articles published by MAJIS are freely available to readers immediately upon publication.

No subscription payment is required to access the full text of an article.

No paywall is placed between readers and the published article.

The journal also does not require readers to register an account solely for the purpose of accessing published articles.

3.2 Global Accessibility

MAJIS makes its published scholarly content available internationally through its online journal platform.

Open Access is provided without regard to:

  • geographic location;

  • institutional affiliation;

  • academic status;

  • nationality; or

  • ability to pay.

The journal's Open Access model is intended to support the international exchange of research in literary studies, literary criticism, literary history, literary theory, literary teaching, and related interdisciplinary fields.

3.3 Licensing

All MAJIS articles are published under the:

Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)

licence.

The licence establishes the permissions and conditions under which readers and other users may reuse published material.

3.4 Attribution Requirement

Under the Attribution (BY) component of CC BY-SA 4.0, users who reuse MAJIS content must provide appropriate credit.

Attribution should, where applicable, identify:

  • the author or authors;

  • the article title;

  • Magistra Andalusia: Jurnal Ilmu Sastra;

  • the DOI or persistent identifier;

  • the applicable Creative Commons licence; and

  • whether changes were made.

Users should not attribute modified material to the original author in a manner that suggests that the author endorses the modification.

3.5 ShareAlike Requirement

Under the ShareAlike (SA) component of CC BY-SA 4.0, adaptations of MAJIS-licensed material must be distributed under the same or a compatible licence as specified by the Creative Commons licence.

This condition is intended to preserve the openness of derivative scholarly and educational works.

3.6 Commercial Reuse

The MAJIS CC BY-SA 4.0 licence does not contain a NonCommercial restriction.

Accordingly, reuse may include commercial purposes, provided that the applicable CC BY-SA 4.0 conditions are respected.

The journal's official copyright and submission information explicitly states that authors and readers may use, share, and distribute the work, including for commercial purposes, subject to proper attribution and the applicable ShareAlike requirement.

3.7 Adaptation and Derivative Works

Users may adapt, remix, transform, translate, or build upon MAJIS publications, subject to CC BY-SA 4.0.

Examples may include:

  • translation;

  • educational adaptation;

  • scholarly commentary;

  • literature reviews;

  • derivative research;

  • data or text analysis;

  • multimedia adaptation; and

  • other lawful transformations.

The original source must be appropriately acknowledged.

3.8 Copyright

MAJIS's current copyright arrangement provides that copyright in published articles is held by the journal.

The journal grants authors and readers broad rights to use, share, and distribute the published work through the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.

This arrangement should be distinguished from Open Access itself.

Open Access concerns the accessibility and permitted reuse of scholarly content, whereas copyright identifies the legal ownership of the underlying work.

3.9 Author Rights

Although MAJIS retains copyright in published works under its current publishing terms, authors retain broad practical rights to use, share, and distribute their work under the applicable CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.

Authors may also self-archive permitted versions of their manuscripts in accordance with the journal's Repository and Self-Archiving Policy.

The Repository and Self-Archiving Policy provides specific conditions for:

  • Submitted Versions / Preprints;

  • Accepted Manuscripts; and

  • Versions of Record.

3.10 Author Self-Archiving

MAJIS permits self-archiving in accordance with its Repository and Self-Archiving Policy.

Authors may deposit:

  • a Submitted Version / Preprint;

  • an Accepted Manuscript; and

  • the Version of Record,

subject to the conditions applicable to each version.

MAJIS does not impose a general embargo on self-archiving under its current policy.

Repository copies should include appropriate attribution and, once available, a link to the official MAJIS publication and DOI.

3.11 Preprints

MAJIS permits the use of preprints.

Authors may make manuscripts publicly available as preprints before or during the submission process.

Authors should disclose the existence of a relevant preprint when submitting the manuscript to MAJIS.

After publication, authors are encouraged to update the preprint record with:

  • the final publication citation;

  • the MAJIS DOI; and

  • a link to the Version of Record.

The preprint should not be represented as the definitive published version.

3.12 Version of Record

The Version of Record is the definitive article published by MAJIS.

Because MAJIS publishes the Version of Record under CC BY-SA 4.0, it may be shared and reused in accordance with the licence.

Users are encouraged to cite and link to the official Version of Record whenever possible because it represents the authoritative publication record and provides access to any subsequent corrections, notices, or other publication updates.

3.13 Article Processing Charges

Open Access availability does not automatically imply that authors must pay an Article Processing Charge (APC).

Any applicable publication fee or APC is governed by the journal's separate Author Fees / Article Processing Charge Policy.

MAJIS will communicate any applicable publication charges transparently through its official journal information and submission system.

Where no APC applies, the absence of an APC does not affect the journal's Open Access status.

3.14 No Subscription Fees

MAJIS does not operate under a subscription-based access model.

Readers are not required to purchase:

  • individual article access;

  • issue access;

  • annual subscriptions; or

  • institutional subscriptions

to access the journal's published articles.

3.15 No Paywall

The journal does not place its published articles behind a paywall.

The full text of published articles is made available through the journal's online platform.

3.16 No Registration Barrier

MAJIS does not require readers to create an account solely to read or download published articles.

Account registration may be necessary for other functions of the journal platform, such as:

  • manuscript submission;

  • editorial administration;

  • peer-review participation; or

  • other OJS functions.

Such operational registration requirements do not constitute restrictions on public access to published articles.

3.17 Machine-Readable Licensing Information

Where technically supported by the publishing platform, MAJIS provides licensing information in machine-readable metadata.

This facilitates:

  • indexing;

  • discovery;

  • repository harvesting;

  • automated licence identification; and

  • reuse by scholarly infrastructure.

Published articles should clearly identify the applicable CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.

3.18 DOI and Persistent Identification

MAJIS assigns DOIs to published articles.

Persistent identifiers support Open Access by allowing users to:

  • locate the official publication;

  • cite the article consistently;

  • link repository copies to the Version of Record;

  • retrieve the article after website changes; and

  • distinguish the article from other scholarly works.

3.19 Indexing and Discoverability

Open Access is supported by appropriate metadata dissemination and scholarly indexing.

MAJIS seeks to make its content discoverable through relevant:

  • scholarly search engines;

  • indexing services;

  • library systems;

  • repository systems;

  • citation databases; and

  • metadata harvesting services.

Discoverability is an important complement to free access because research cannot be effectively used if potential readers cannot identify it.

3.20 Text and Data Mining

Because MAJIS articles are openly accessible and licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, users may undertake lawful text and data mining activities consistent with:

  • the licence;

  • applicable copyright law;

  • database rights where relevant;

  • privacy requirements; and

  • technical conditions of the journal platform.

Where machine-readable content or metadata are available, users should use those mechanisms responsibly and avoid imposing unreasonable technical loads on the journal's infrastructure.

3.21 Educational Use

MAJIS supports the use of its Open Access publications for legitimate educational purposes.

Subject to CC BY-SA 4.0, educators and institutions may:

  • assign articles as reading materials;

  • include articles in course materials;

  • distribute permitted copies;

  • quote and discuss published content;

  • adapt material for teaching; and

3.22 Scholarly Reuse

Subsequent users should distinguish clearly between:

  • the original findings;

  • their own analysis; and

3.23 Third-Party Material

Open Access to a MAJIS article does not necessarily mean that every component of the article is owned by MAJIS or licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Some articles may contain:

  • photographs;

  • artwork;

  • reproduced literary material;

  • tables;

  • figures;

  • datasets;

  • quotations; or

  • other third-party content

subject to separate rights.

Where third-party material is not covered by the article's CC BY-SA 4.0 licence, users must obtain permission from the relevant rights holder when required by law.

Authors are responsible for identifying and obtaining appropriate permissions for third-party material included in their manuscripts.

3.24 Proper Citation

Open Access does not eliminate the requirement to cite sources.

Users who reuse MAJIS publications must provide appropriate attribution in accordance with scholarly norms and the applicable Creative Commons licence.

Open availability must not be interpreted as permission to:

  • plagiarise;

  • misrepresent authorship;

  • remove attribution;

  • falsely claim original authorship; or

  • manipulate the publication record.

3.25 Research Integrity

The Open Access status of an article does not alter the journal's standards concerning:

  • plagiarism;

  • authorship;

  • research misconduct;

  • data integrity;

  • conflicts of interest;

  • peer review;

  • ethical oversight; or

  • post-publication corrections.

All published research remains subject to the journal's publication-ethics policies.

3.26 Corrections and the Open Scholarly Record

Open Access extends to the transparent maintenance of the scholarly record.

If an article is subsequently:

  • corrected;

  • subject to an Expression of Concern;

  • updated; or

  • retracted,

the relevant notice should remain publicly accessible and linked to the affected article.

Readers should be able to determine the current publication status of the article without encountering unnecessary access barriers.

3.27 Retractions

Retraction notices should be freely accessible.

A retracted article should normally remain part of the scholarly record but should be clearly identified as retracted in accordance with the journal's Retraction and Expression of Concern Policy.

Open Access therefore applies not only to valid research articles but also to relevant notices required to maintain an accurate and transparent scholarly record.

3.28 Long-Term Accessibility

MAJIS recognises that immediate access is meaningful only if published content remains available over time.

The journal therefore supports long-term preservation through:

  • PKP Preservation Network;

  • regular server backups;

  • database backups; and

  • other preservation mechanisms adopted by the journal where appropriate.

3.29 Repository and Digital Preservation

Institutional and subject repositories provide additional access and preservation routes.

MAJIS's Repository and Self-Archiving Policy permits authors to deposit specified versions of their work without a general embargo.

Repository copies complement rather than replace the journal's official Version of Record and digital-preservation arrangements.

3.30 Funder and Institutional Requirements

MAJIS recognises that authors may be subject to Open Access requirements imposed by:

  • research funders;

  • universities;

  • government agencies;

  • research institutions; or

  • other scholarly organisations.

The journal's immediate Open Access model and self-archiving permissions are intended to facilitate compliance with such requirements where possible.

Authors remain responsible for checking specific requirements imposed by their funder or institution.

3.31 Geographic and Economic Equity

MAJIS recognises that subscription-based scholarly communication can create unequal access to academic literature.

The journal's Open Access model is intended to reduce such barriers by making published research available without subscription fees or paywalls.

This approach supports access by researchers and readers who may not have access to well-funded institutional library collections.

3.32 Public and Societal Access

MAJIS recognises that scholarly research may be relevant beyond academic institutions.

Open Access enables:

4. Statement of Principle

Magistra Andalusia: Jurnal Ilmu Sastra considers Open Access to be an integral part of its mission to disseminate scholarly knowledge in literary studies and related fields.

The journal therefore provides immediate, free, and unrestricted online access to its published articles without subscription fees, paywalls, or unnecessary registration barriers.

MAJIS publishes its articles under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence. This permits readers to read, download, copy, distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon published works, including for commercial purposes, provided that appropriate attribution is given, changes are identified where applicable, and derivative works comply with the ShareAlike requirement.

MAJIS retains copyright in its published works under its current publishing arrangement while granting authors and readers broad rights to use, share, and distribute the content through the applicable Creative Commons licence.

  • research integrity;

  • corrections;

  • Expressions of Concern;

  • retractions; and

  • responsible publication practices.
